ELEMENTS IN NATURAL AND BUILT ENVIRONMENT

This module aims to learn on two major components; the natural and built environments. Both natural and built environments are one of the most significant aspects of human life. It pervades every facet of our personal and public activity, from the scope of living, work, and play. From personal to global, we create and inhabit manmade structure and green environmental spaces not only to fulfill the need for living and shelter, but also to facilitate and communicate various social, cultural, political, economic, and organizational environments and realities

Module Led by Mr. Paul and Ms. Dee

Task:

n this assignment, we were tasked to watch the movie documentary 'EARTH 2007' and to present factual information, personal experiences, observation, and thoughts on an A4 size document. The content requires the observation, extended research, and reflection on the things that the student has been documenting and experiencing, and what interests the student the most and maybe some life-changing event from the documentary the student has watched. The required contents of the Nature Journal are: Introduction, Experiencing Nature, and Appreciating Nature.

Progress:
I began the undertaking by settling on the intro page of the Nature Journal, I chose an arm holding the earth to speak to the outcomes of human activities on the world. I chose to leave the shade of the diary to be monochrome as I didn't know that my shading was acceptable. I at that point made the presentation part of the diary. From that point onward, I drew the widely varied vegetation, scene, and characteristic marvel. Subsequent to completing the Experiencing Nature segment of the diary, I continued to draw the Appreciating Nature area of the diary.

Outcome:

The outcome didn't really come out as I expected, it didn't turn out to be very infographic as I didn't really know how to arrange the pictures and information to make it an infographic. There were many paragraphs and although the drawings were fine it was a little bland.

Reflection:
From this assignment, I acquired lifelong learning from the 8 TGC which is to locate, extract, synthesize, and utilize information effectively. I learned how to locate and extract the necessary information from the movie and the internet and to utilize the information correctly in my journal. I also learned how to manage oneself and be self-reliant, which is the intrapersonal skills from the 8 TGC. I learned how to manage my own time, plan out my schedule, and refrained from asking my peers on tips on how to do the assignment.

Task:

In this assignment, we were grouped into groups of 3 to 4 people where we are tasked with developing a 3-5 minutes video discussion of a nature topic that covers the assigned type of natural setting/landscape from different categories of the earth system; discussion about the selected natural setting; discussion on how human and living things adapt to the natural setting; and the positive and negative impact of human activities or built environment towards the natural setting and ideas to overcome the issue or enhance the impact. The video can be recorded on the students' preferred platform. A script is required before filming the video discussion.

Progress:
After getting the assigned topic, we started researching the information about our natural setting. We compiled the information of our natural setting and started working on the script. One of my groupmates and I were tasked to find out the information and making the slides for the video that'll be used in the video discussion. After finishing the script and compiling the slides, we started recording our video discussion. In the first video, our voices weren't clear enough and the video had some problems and did not show the full image, so we decided to film another video. After filming the second video, I was tasked with editing the video for the group. After editing, the video was finally ready for submission.

Outcome:

Personally, I think the outcome was pretty good in terms of the effects and the content of the video. I think we could improve on the entertainment value of our video a little more but overall I personally think that we did a decent job in this assignment.

Reflection:
From this assignment, I acquired communication skills which is one of the 8 TGC. I learned how to communicate with my teammates and find out their schedule so that I can plan out the perfect time to have a group discussion and to film the video. I also acquired digital literacy, where I learned how to edit the presentation slide with all sorts of infographics and utilizing everything in the application.

Task:

In this assignment, we were tasked to make an infographic pamphlet of our hometown. The content of this pamphlet contains the general background and history of the hometown; the significant element; the accessibility; the zoom-in of the selected area; elaboration of built components/ zoning through tangible and intangible components. Illustration of an infographic map is required as the main reference; the identification and justification of a sentimental part of the hometown, and the conclusion.

Progress:
I started off the assignment by researching on my hometown and all the information needed for the content of the pamphlet. After researching the information, I started to draw out the front cover of the pamphlet and continued drawing the rest of the content of the pamphlet after finishing the front cover. Since the market set I bought arrived, I was so thrilled to ace this assignment. At first, I was struggled to use the marker as a color painting since it's was my first time and I never know how it worked, so I brought a paper that have been used and beginning to test it out what color does it looks like and how can I handle the lead of the marker. Turns out it was really good in terms of the coloring and it was so satisfying to paint after I wrote and drew down everything. Lastly, I taped up all the pages into one pamphlet and recorded myself flipping the pamphlet.

Outcome:

Personally, I think the outcome wasn't as good as I wanted to be. There are many drawing flaws and some weirds spacing throughout the whole assignment and my coloring wasn't as good looking as I saw from the other artists. However, I feel like the pamphlet is very informative and the drawing was decent enough.

Reflection:

In this assignment, I applied TGC's Intrapersonal skills where I manage my own time and schedule to finish the assignment punctually. I also applied TGC's lifelong learning skills where I locate, extract, synthesize, and utilize the information effectively when doing the assignment.

Task:

This assignment is separated into 2 parts - Part A and Part B. For Part A, in a group of 6, we were tasked to make an A2 size canvas on understanding urban, suburban, and rural areas. We were to find the topography, population, type of buildings/space, infrastructures, and lifestyle of each area. For Part B, we are to analyze and evaluate the detailed elements of our assigned urban area. We were to zoom-in on the components and use Kevin Lunch 'Image of the city' guidelines on 'path' and 'nodes' and also to further discuss and analyze the built components and the tangible and intangible components in detail.

Progress:

We started off the assignment with Part A, we made a general comparison of the urban, suburban, and rural areas before we decided on choosing the specific areas for Part A. We did that so we can understand what type of areas we should choose before making a more detailed comparison. After finishing Part A's Canva, we proceeded onto Part B. For Part B, we started off with research, we compiled all the information into a Google Slide. After gathering all the information, we made the map zoning and found pictures for our Canva. Only after gathering all the necessary resources, we started on the Canva. After finishing the Canva, we submitted it to the lecturer through Google Forms.

Outcome:

As for Part A, it didn't have much of an attractive appearance to it as it was quite bland and boring, but for Part B, it looked more infographic compared to Part A, and most of the contents were neatly arranged.

Reflection:
From this assignment,  I applied TGC's communication skills to communicate and arrange a good time for group discussion and a suitable time for all group members to do research. I also applied TGC's lifelong learning skill to locate, extract, synthesize, and utilize the information effectively. I also acquired TGC's interpersonal skills to understand and assume leadership where I gave tasks to my other group members to carry out.

REFLECTION ESSAYS

The Walled City of Kowloon 九龍城寨

“The virtual trip of references and videos of Hong Kong's The Walled City of Kowloon showed a very cramped city that fit 500 buildings on 2.7 hectares of land that was build without the help and knowledge of engineers and architects during the Song Dynasty and was used by Japanese forces as a fort during WWII. The virtual trip made me realize that the involvement of engineers and architects are crucial in building a building as based on the Walled City of Kowloon, the people had to struggle and adapt to the environment there as they did not have proper piping systems, sewage systems, electrical systems, water systems and many more. The citizens also did not have a proper area to dispose their waste and garbage and also had to struggle with the not planned placement of buildings and rooms as the citizens did not have much space to move and do their business. In conclusion, I think that it is really important to apply the knowledge of built environment and abiding building law when building anything as it allows people to live a comfortable, clean and safe environment.”
